In July of 2019, we launched our landscaping service. We are excited to expand our field and help you take care of your home and properties beyond our expertise in trees. Here are some of our simple steps to install sod or turf:
Step 1: Start with a level surface.
In some instances, you may be able to leave the existing lawn and fill in the holes with organic material such as sand or dirt to keep the ground level. Make sure that the grass is cut low and the topsoil you use is evenly dispersed. It is also important to note that you will be leveling the sod with any edges from surfaces like driveways and sidewalks. Usually the bed will lay about one inch below the fixed edge you are installing around to keep it even.
If you prefer to remove the existing lawn before installing your sod, there are three ways you can do so. You can use a chemical similar to Round Up on your grass, a tiller/ bed scraper (only use this option if you do not have rocks or roots that pose an issue), or a shovel to remove the grass from your yard.
Step 2: Make sure you fertilize the soil.
It’s important to ensure the healthy growth of your sod by fertilizing the soil beneath it. Some people also add a layer of fertilizer after laying the sod, however by doing this step it helps nutrients get to the roots and improve the PH. This will lead to a healthier and greener lawn.
Step 3: Lay out the sod.
Of course, you want to use the freshest sod or turf option available. Also ensure that you are not overlapping the sides and to use sharp knifes to cut down the edges. The best way to install the sod is to begin along the longest stretch of fixed edges you have and verify that it is level. Keep the patches staggered so that the short edges don’t align with each other.
Step 4: Proper irrigation.
Finally, the hard work is finished! Don’t forget to water the new sod at least one hour a day for the first two weeks to promote root growth. Note that if you install during the summer, you will need to do this twice a day since the temperatures are higher. The best time of day would be early morning and as the sun is setting to avoid scorching your new lawn.
